No digital nomad visa — here's what works instead
United Kingdom Digital Nomad Visa
Last updated: July 2026
The short answer: it doesn't exist
The UK has no digital nomad visa as of July 2026 and none is planned — "digital nomad" is not a recognised category in UK immigration. What the UK does have is a visitor rule (since January 2024) that permits incidental remote work during a visit, plus serious long-term routes like Global Talent.
Myths to ignore
- "The UK lets digital nomads work remotely for 6 months" — risky oversimplification. Visitors may work remotely for their overseas employer only if remote work is NOT the primary purpose of the visit. Effectively living in the UK while working full-time remotely breaches the rules, and repeat back-to-back visits get flagged at the border.
- Any work for a UK company, payment from a UK source, or secondment to a UK branch of your employer is prohibited on a visit.

Short stays
The UK is not in the Schengen Area, so UK days never count toward the Schengen 90/180 limit — London is a classic reset stop. Watch the tax side: 183+ days in a UK tax year makes you UK tax resident on worldwide income under the Statutory Residence Test.

Common questions
Does the UK have a digital nomad visa?
No — and none is planned. Since January 2024 visitors may do incidental remote work for their overseas employer during a stay of up to 6 months, but remote work cannot be the primary purpose of the visit.
Can I work remotely from the UK for 6 months legally?
Only if the remote work is incidental to a genuine visit (tourism, family, business meetings). The Home Office assesses whether you are effectively living in the UK via repeat visits — that breaches the visitor rules. Work for any UK company or from a UK payroll is prohibited outright.
Do UK days count toward the Schengen 90/180 limit?
No. The UK left the EU and was never in Schengen, so UK days are separate — but non-visa nationals now need a £20 ETA to enter, and 183+ days in a UK tax year triggers UK tax residency.
